As the road winds beyond Bung Kan, Thailand’s northeastern landscape reveals its wild side. Here, the Mekong River road leads through remote countryside where herds of water buffalo might slow your journey as often as any vehicle. The great river hides from view until you reach Nakhon Phanom, a charming town 313km from Nong Khai that offers the region’s most breathtaking riverscapes.
Nakhon Phanom, whose name translates to “City of Mountains,” presents a postcard-perfect view of the Mekong framed against the towering karst formations of Laos. The town’s wide, tree-lined streets are dotted with colonial-era architecture, quaint wooden shophouses, and impressive public buildings that whisper stories of its rich past.
The town’s most famous celebration comes alive after the rainy season, typically in late October, when the river becomes the stage for a magical illuminated boat procession. Dozens of 10-meter-long vessels, decorated with thousands of twinkling lights and laden with offerings, float down the Mekong in a dazzling display. This week-long festival, marking the end of Buddhist Lent, also hosts thrilling dragon boat races that bring friendly competition between Thai and Lao teams.
Sunset Cruises on the Mekong
For those wanting to experience the river’s magic without crossing borders, sunset boat trips depart daily from the main pier. These affordable cruises (B50) glide along the Mekong as daylight fades, offering unbeatable views of both Thai and Lao riverbanks. With drinks available onboard, it’s the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.
Gateway to Laos: The Friendship Bridge
The third Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge, inaugurated with much ceremony in 2011, stands just 8km north of town. This vital link has transformed border crossings in the region, with private vehicles currently charged B50 for passage. While the bridge’s impact on traditional ferry services to Thakhek (Khammouan) in Laos remains fluid, visitors can still obtain 30-day Lao visas on arrival (US$30–42) regardless of their crossing method.
