The Ultimate Guide to Finding the Perfect Time to Visit Oman

Oman enjoys a climate that’s quintessentially Arabian: picture hot, sun-drenched summers and beautifully mild winters. It’s a land of sharp seasonal contrasts—unbelievably hot for much of the year, yet surprisingly pleasant when the heat cools off.

Summer in Oman (from around March/April to September/October) brings intense heat across most of the country. Daytime temperatures can easily soar into the 40s°C from May through July. Travel during this period is usually not recommended—except for a visit to Salalah. There, a welcome annual monsoon called the khareef sweeps in from June to late August or early September, creating lush, green landscapes and refreshing temperatures. It’s a magical time to explore the region, though you’ll want to book well in advance as accommodations fill quickly and rates climb.

Winter—spanning October/November to February/March—offers a complete change of pace. Daytime temperatures hover comfortably under 30°C, and evenings can be pleasantly cool, even a bit brisk in elevated areas like the Saiq Plateau. This is the perfect season for exploring Oman’s natural beauty, from desert dunes to rugged mountains.

Rain in Oman is a rare event, and the country remains bone-dry for much of the year. Salalah during the khareef is the exception, with its seasonal showers. Elsewhere, if rain does fall, it’s most likely between December and March—just enough to freshen the air.

Festivals and Vacations in Oman

Oman’s festival calendar may not be packed, but it’s rich with cultural meaning. Aside from the large-scale Muscat Festival and the popular Salalah Tourism Festival, religious holidays like Ramadan offer a unique chance to connect with local traditions—provided you’re mindful of customs and restrictions.

Muscat Festival runs from late January through February. This vibrant celebration showcases Omani culture through a mix of traditional performances, heritage displays, fashion, food festivals, and live concerts—all set against the beautiful backdrop of Qurum Park.

Salalah Tourism Festival (also called the Khareef Festival) takes place from June 21 to September 21. Coinciding with the monsoon season, it features cultural shows, sports, concerts, and shopping events. Make sure to check www.salalahfestival.com for updates.

Ramadan is a deeply spiritual month for Muslims, marked by fasting from sunrise to sunset. As a visitor, you’ll need to avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public out of respect. Hotels provide private dining areas, and some serve alcohol discreetly after dark. The evenings come alive with Iftar—the breaking of the fast—and the celebration culminates in Eid Al Fitr, a joyful holiday marked by feasting and family gatherings.

Renaissance Day on July 23 honors the 1970 rise of Sultan Qaboos, which ushered in a new era of progress and modernization for Oman.

Eid al Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, occurs about 70 days after Ramadan. It commemorates the story of Ibrahim’s faith and involves traditional sacrifices. Alcohol is not served on the day of the festival or the day before, and the atmosphere is one of reverence and community.
