When deciding the best time to travel to Sri Lanka, keep in mind that weather patterns can shift from year to year. Climate change adds another layer of unpredictability, so flexibility is key. Sri Lanka Weather: All You Need to Know
Understanding Sri Lanka’s Monsoons
Rainfall plays a big role in planning your Sri Lanka trip. The island experiences two main monsoon seasons:
The southwest monsoon (also known as “Yala”) affects the west, southwest, and hill country between April or May and September, with the heaviest rainfall occurring from April to June.
The northeast monsoon (“Maha”) brings rain to the east coast from November through March, peaking around November and December.
There’s also an inter-monsoonal period in October and November when thunderstorms and heavy rain can pop up almost anywhere on the island.
Average Temperatures in Sri Lanka
Thanks to its proximity to the equator, Sri Lanka enjoys fairly consistent temperatures year-round. Coastal regions and lowlands typically see daytime highs between 26°C and 30°C, sometimes climbing even higher. In cities like Kandy, temperatures are milder, averaging 18–22°C. Up in the highlands around Nuwara Eliya, expect a refreshing 14–17°C during the day—though nights can get surprisingly chilly.
Humidity is often high across the island, especially in the southwest where it can reach a steamy 90%. Most areas average between 60% and 80%, so light, breathable clothing is a must.
When Is the Best Month to Visit Sri Lanka?
Your ideal travel time depends largely on where you want to go:
For the west and south coasts and the hill country, plan your visit between December and March.
If you’re drawn to the east coast or the north, aim for April through September.
Visiting Sri Lanka in Winter
December – February
While the north and east coasts are rainy this time of year, the south and west are at their best. Head to Weligama for surfing or relax on the gorgeous beaches of Unawatuna and Mirissa. Winter is also prime whale-watching season off the southern coast.
Don’t miss the colonial charm of Galle, especially during the lively Galle Literary Festival in late January or early February. It’s also a great time to explore Kandy and the hill country, including Horton Plains National Park and Adam’s Peak. Just remember—Christmas is a popular travel period, so book early.

When to Visit Sri Lanka in Spring
March – May
March still offers lovely weather in the south, but by April, signs of the monsoon begin to appear. Whale watching remains excellent along the south coast during these months.
Consider exploring less-visited regions like Jaffna in the north or the Cultural Triangle. If the humidity in the south feels too intense in May, escape to the cooler hill country. Be sure to experience Vesak Poya in May—a major Buddhist festival celebrating the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Buddha.

When to Visit Sri Lanka in Summer
June – August
Summer is the time to explore the north and east. The hill country remains pleasant and cool, though occasional rain is possible. Discover Tamil culture in Jaffna or relax on the beautiful east coast beaches.
If your visit aligns with July or August, don’t miss the spectacular Esala Poya Perahera in Kandy—one of Sri Lanka’s most dazzling festivals.

When to Visit Sri Lanka in the Fall
September – November

Festivals and Public Vacations in Sri Lanka
With 25 public holidays and four major religions
Get ready to immerse yourself in the heart and soul of Sri Lanka through its incredible festivals! This island nation is a treasure trove of cultural and spiritual celebrations that light up the calendar all year round. While this makes for an unforgettable travel experience, it’s wise to plan your visit around these dates—since daily life often pauses during major festivities.
Most festivals in Sri Lanka are deeply rooted in religion and follow the lunar calendar, which adds an extra month every few years. This means dates can shift slightly annually. Muslim celebrations, also lunar-based, gradually move backward each year. Expect grand parades called peraheras during Buddhist events, featuring majestic elephants, drummers, and dancers. Poya (full moon) days see increased travel, and alcohol sales are restricted—though tourists are usually accommodated.
