The southwest monsoon (also known as “Yala”) affects the west, southwest, and hill country between April or May and September, with the heaviest rainfall occurring from April to June.
The northeast monsoon (“Maha”) brings rain to the east coast from November through March, peaking around November and December.
There’s also an inter-monsoonal period in October and November when thunderstorms and heavy rain can pop up almost anywhere on the island.

Thanks to its proximity to the equator, Sri Lanka enjoys fairly consistent temperatures year-round. Coastal regions and lowlands typically see daytime highs between 26°C and 30°C, sometimes climbing even higher. In cities like Kandy, temperatures are milder, averaging 18–22°C. Up in the highlands around Nuwara Eliya, expect a refreshing 14–17°C during the day—though nights can get surprisingly chilly.
Humidity is often high across the island, especially in the southwest where it can reach a steamy 90%. Most areas average between 60% and 80%, so light, breathable clothing is a must.
When Is the Best Month to Visit Sri Lanka?

Visiting Sri Lanka in Winter
December – February
